Let’s say you have started to put on weight, even though you feel like you’re not eating anything. You are not alone. Dieters aren’t lying when they say they don’t eat, they may actually not realize what they are doing! This has been reported by a number of gastric balloon experts, who have tried to gain a greater understanding of obesity.
According to an article in Sleep, published by the American Sleep Disorders Association, many adults eat while they are sleeping. Worryingly, this condition, now described as “Night Eating Syndrome”, means people unwittingly eat huge quantities of food, and often turn to things that aren’t edibile at all, including cigarette butts, cat food, and soil.
What Is Obesity?
Someone is classed as obese when they carry so much fat in their body that their health starts to be negatively affected. This is usually described by using the BMI (body mass index). A BMI of 30 and higher means that someone is obese. A BMI of between 25 and 29.9 is classed as overweight. Being overweight or obese places people at increased risk of developing osteoarthritis, certain types of cancer, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Hence, people who are obese have a much lower life expectancy as well. The standard form of treatment is diet and exercise, but surgery may be offered if that doesn’t work. Most cases of obesity are caused by eating too much of the wrong thing and not moving enough, two things that need changing even if people are offered surgery.
The terms “overweight” and “obese” are just labels, but they are important ones. Essentially, they mean that you are not healthy. It also means that you are more likely to develop other dangerous conditions. What you also have to understand, however, is the limitations of the BMI. Yes, a BMI of 25 and over means that you are overweight or obese. It does not, however, tell you how much body fat you currently hold. Hence, people like athletes, who are perfectly healthy, may clinically be classed as overweight or obese, while not being at risk of developing any of the associated health conditions. That said, having a high BMI due to being overweight or obese rather than due to being an athlete is generally something that can be observed with the naked eye.
However, should you wish to know just how bad the problem is, you can calculate your body’s fat distribution. This can be done by measuring the thickness of skin folds. You can also calculate your waist circumference and compare this to your height, or complete the waist to hip circumference rations. Other techniques, including computed tomography, ultrasounds, and MRIs have also been used. Regardless of the results of these more specific tests, however, you must find ways to lower your weight if you are too heavy. Whether this is done through a surgical procedure or not depends on your personal situation.
