There’s no doubt about it: 2016 promises to be a great year for television. Even if you aren’t an avid fan of prime time, we’re willing to bet that there will be at least a couple of shows hitting the air in the coming months that will pull you in. We are, after all, in a television renaissance!
Of course, before we get into the shows you absolutely shouldn’t miss and which are worth picking back up after the winter hiatus ends, you need to find an affordable way to keep up with everything. After doing some research and running some numbers, the most affordable method I’ve found of keeping up with all of the great television hitting the networks this year is by buying a cable or satellite package. Yes, seriously! Unlike streaming services, digital antennae, etc., cable and satellite TV services often come with both On Demand and DVR services. This way you can record the shows you miss instead of hoping they show up on a streaming service later — especially for networks that are notorious for withholding their offerings (we’re looking at you, CBS).
So now that you have a way to get all of that great programming, which shows are most worth your time?
Yes, technically this is three shows. TGIT is the acronym for Thank God It’s Thursday, the night on ABC on which Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder air. These Shondaland vehicles are amazing and, particularly this season, anything but predictable. The genius of Rhimes is that she knows where a plot line will typically go but she never falls into cliche. She takes her characters somewhere new and it’s always better than we thought it could be. Devote your Thursdays to watching these live. You’ll be glad you did!
The Expanse is a show that recently started airing on the SyFy network and it is being hailed as the next Battlestar Galactica. That’s a big claim but so far the series is absolutely living up to the hype. We’re hoping that this means SyFy will shake off the terrible programming of the last few years and bring in a new era of worthwhile programming we love. And even if it doesn’t, you’ll want to save room for the Expanse on your DVR. Trust us.
That’s right: our beloved Mulder and Scully are coming back for a short mini-series revival of our favorite groundbreaking sci-fi/fantasy/horror drama. X-Files paved the way for multi-season arc plots that we now take for granted in shows like Lost, etc. It is also one of the few shows from back then that, when we catch it in reruns, still manages to scare the crud out of us. We can’t wait to see what crazy conspiracy theories Mulder and Scully battle in the new mini-series!
Back for a second year, this Winter Season show has everything we love about television. An amazing female heroine (seriously Hollywood, we need more of these!), snarky banter, etc. It’s also part of the Marvel universe so it’s a great way to get your fix while you’re waiting for Cap’s summer movie to be released.
The fourth season of this show on the CW continues to surprise us with its authenticity, humor and uniquely non-CWy-ness. Oliver Queen and crew are back and continuing to battle big bads and do their best to keep Starling City from falling apart. Malcom Merlin is one of the most cunning baddies on television right now and even if he weren’t, the seemingly required shirtless Stephen Amell scene that happens at least once an episode is enough to keep us coming back week after week!
Big Bang Theory
Loved by the nerdy and non-nerdy alike, the Big Bang Theory is always good for a chuckle and some heart. Keep up with Leonard, Sheldon, Penny and the gang in the show’s ninth season. These characters have grown up quite a bit since we first met them, and the quasi-regular Wil Wheaton recurrences are always fun.
These are just some of the shows that are going to be priorities for us in 2016. What shows are you most looking forward to seeing on your screens?
