In many parts of the world, clean water is a given. You turn your faucet knob and crystal clear water spills out. You don’t really have to think about where it comes from, and you don’t really have to worry about whether it’s safe to drink. However, that’s not the case everywhere. Children all around the world wake up every day unsure of where their water is going to come from. When they are water insecure or exposed to unclean water, they have a hard time learning and moving forward. Clean food and water are the greatest gifts you can give to a child.
Providing Children with Clean Water
Lead is an abundant mineral, it doesn’t corrode, and it is very pliable. Because of these reasons, lead used to be very ubiquitous as a building component. It was especially popular for piping. Well, research has proven that lead is actually incredibly dangerous. It is a very caustic chemical that causes skin irritation, rash, cognitive damage, executive functioning difficulties, and behavioural disorders. It is considered a very high order toxic chemical.
However, many developing countries have pipes that are made of lead or they have untreated lead in the groundwater. As a heavy metal, lead can be filtered out, but they need proper training and the filters to do it properly. When you sponsor a child, you help that child gain access to water that is free from lead. Sponsorships help towns build wells that can supply clean water to an entire village. A small donation can help provide water security for more than just one child. Lead isn’t the only contaminant, though.
Bacterial infections from untreated water are incredibly common in certain parts of the world. Typically, these infections come from animal faeces in streams and rivers. Those types of contaminants need to be filtered out and destroyed using chemicals and/or heat. There are many different filtration processes that are fairly affordable and incredibly effective. However, the people in these towns need to know how to properly use them, and they need the money to afford these techniques.
These are things like sanitary toilets, water filtration systems, and water treatment processes that can provide children with clean water. The approach has to be two-fold. The people must be educated about the dangers and how to combat them. Then they must have access to the materials.
Providing Children with Upward Opportunities
That better future is the entire point of sponsoring children and sending money to developing nations. You hope that with your donation, someone is able to do a little bit better than her parents. Then her children will do a little bit better than she did. Eventually, the world will be able to move forward and dig itself out of some of the holes we humans have created for ourselves.
When you don’t have clean water, you lack upward opportunities to better yourself and your community. You’re solely focused on living day to day. Once you have access to clean water, you can focus on moving forward and building a better future.
